Ebb: The Management of Consequences — some thoughts

Here’s a resolution for 2024 — get yourself a copy of the excellent The Management of Consequences, the latest EP from Ebb. To make it easy, the EP is released on January 1, and you can get a copy from their BandCamp, as start with their record company Boudicca Records. The latter takes you to the former which seems appropriate for an EP dedicated to the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A.

Once you’ve ordered the CD, grab the digital download and give yourself just over 18 minutes to enjoy your first listen. It won’t your last.

What’s on the EP?

There are three tracks:

  1. Silent Saviour
  2. Cost & Consequence
  3. Nieu.

The first of these (Silent Saviour) consists in turn of three movements (unnamed as far as I can tell).

If you’ve caught any of the band’s YouTube performances you’ll know how impressive they are live, and there’s a shorter live version of third EP track Nieu. As to the EP as a whole, it’s intended as a companion to Mad and Killing Time (which I rave about here), without any need for the one to follow the other.

If you get the CD, there’s also a collection of photographs of individual band members in various settings, arranged in order of the band member’s ages. These are taken at various times of day and represent different moments in humanities time on this planet. You aren’t just buying an EP but a work of art beyond just the audible.

All tracks are penned by Erin Bennett (lead guitar and vocals) but the first movement of Silent Saviour is an instrumental delight allowing the whole band to showcase their talents without the need for any attention stealing solos prog rock was known for in the ’70s. From there you will be hooked and after the final track fades, you’ll have the same two questions I have:

  1. When can I get even more music from Ebb, and
  2. When can I see them live anywhere near me?

As to the first, I hope (being greedy) we get more in 2024 (though a good start), the second is partly answered by their current tour plans. I’ve just to work out which venue I can get to!
